“Say What?”

Whew, there for a while as I read scripture this morning I thought it said that it would be easier for a rich to get a camel through the eye of a needle than get into heaven.
Exactly what did I read?

You are invited to read the following Scripture passage.

Luke 18:24-30
With God All Things Are Possible

24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!
25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

27 But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”
28 Then Peter said, “See, we have left all and followed You.”
29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Man, you are killing us, Jesus.
No, he is not.

For a long time, I believed that the eye of a needle was the name of a gate at Jerusalem. It was a low gate and the camel needed to lower itself to get through. That made me feel better.
However, I discovered this was not true, the verse really meant what it said.

Why would it be so hard for a rich person to be in heaven? Well many times the rich worship their money. Perhaps they use their money to buy things that take them farther from God.

So will there be rich people in heaven? Of course, there will be. The scripture says nothing is impossible with God. He can and will do it.

If you are fortunate enough to have plenty of money, be generous with it. Use it for the Lord. This can be one way the rich serve and honor Christ.
