“Identifying With Those You Teach”
I remember the first time I felt like I could speak before people. It was in high school. We were asked to report something we knew about.
My report was about butchering animals. I had been around the butchering business since I was a little kid. I knew at least the basics of it.
I was very surprised by how interested the other kids were about it. They asked a lot of questions that I could answer. From then on, I had more confidence to speak in public.
Please read the following verses. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law, I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law, I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
Paul knew what it was like to deal with people. He knew what it was like to be rich and have nothing. He had credibility because he was a man who before ministry had been involved in the things that other people do, so much so that he could identify with them and they with him.
Interestingly enough, the best preparer for ministry was my work in the secular world. I know what it was like to own and run a business with my dad and uncle. I knew what it was like to deal with customers.
And that is not that different from pastoring. Well, there is one big difference. The subject of my secular job was meat, lots of meats. ‘
Now the One I serve is the Lord Jesus Christ. And while I might have known a lot about meat, there was always something to learn.
While I know Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, I have much to learn about Him. And I can’t wait to let others know the exciting truths that I am learning.
Have a tremendous day in the Lord.
Be Blessed, Be a Blessing; Amen
