The religious leaders always seemed to be embroiled in discussions and controversies with Jesus.
They wanted to trap Him, to trip Him up but they could never do it.
In this particular scripture passage, they ask Him for a sign to see if He has an extraordinary miracle He will perform for them.
But instead of performing a miracle, He tells them about a miracle that is coming.
Please read the following verses.
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
I can almost see the religious leaders scratching their heads, saying what? Has this guy gone mad?
Now we as believers know Jesus was telling the leaders that
He would die, go to paradise and then rise on the third day.
As in many of Jesus’ teachings and miracles, the religious leaders miss the whole point of what Jesus is telling them.
He was the Messiah, He would be their King. Prepare the Kingdom, Your King is here.
How sad, the religious leaders and many other Jewish people never picked up on who Christ was.
Do you know who Jesus Christ is?
He is Lord and Savior of all.
He has paid the price for all of our sins.
When we accept His blood payment for our sin, He baptizes us by the Holy Spirit and indwells us.
Don’t be like the religious leaders.
They missed out on the Savior.
Call out to the Lord Jesus Christ today.
Ask Him to help You accept Him.
