“So You Want to Be First Do You? “

Have you ever gone to a wedding reception, maybe a banquet where they say the order that the tables should go for food?

I have found myself thinking, I wonder which table will go first. And I am happy when my table is called be it first or last, but I prefer earlier.

When in the band, I was in the trombone section. The director would rank the trombones in order of ability. So you would have a first chair trombone, second, well you get the picture. If you wanted (And we were encouraged by the musicians we took private lessons from) you could challenge the trombones (all instruments were under the same plan) seated ahead of us. The band director would sit in his office out of our sight and tell us each what to play. Whoever played better was the winner and would be the higher chair.

Let’s face it, in the atmosphere we live in, many aspire to be the best. We want to be first. We even hear from some of our politicians, America first.

With this in mind, you are invited to read the following verses.
Matthew 20:20-28

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. 21 “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” We can,” they answered. 23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father. “24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Serving the Lord God is a whole new ballgame to us in America. And we are given the example of how this will look, by Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.

He of all people should have been number one, being served by the rest of us. But at His First Coming, the Lord Jesus shows us the example of the way He desires we live, a suffering servant.

Living as a suffering servant will win you the trust of those you seek to lead to Christ. Living as a suffering servant will gain the attention of others. I pray that we can turn that attention from ourselves to the One that deserves all Honor and Glory, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

May He alone be praised!!

Have a tremendous day in the Lord,

Let everything that has breath (this includes you) Praise and thank the Lord.

Be Blessed,

Be a Blessing;

Amen
